Typographic Profiles

Typographic Profiles define how biblical text is standardized (quotation marks, spaces, ligatures) during copying, not in the reader’s display.

List

Name and Language columns. The Default badge indicates the profile used when a copy profile selects the automatic option for that language.

Actions: New, Edit, Duplicate, Delete (confirmation required; irreversible action).

General Options

Character and symbol replacements: Typographic apostrophe, oe → œ ligature, ... → … ellipsis, Spaced hyphen → em dash.

  • Curly quotes — straight quotes " become the quotes of the selected level (opening, closing). Inner space is the space between the quotation mark and the text (often a non-breaking space in French).
  • Remove square brackets — removes the characters [ and ], while keeping the text inside.
  • Range dash — the symbol used between two numbers in a citation (verses or chapters).

Handling Spaces

For each punctuation mark (:, ;, !, ?, ellipsis, hyphen):

  • Space before — a non-breaking space before the punctuation mark.

  • Spaces after — one or two spaces after the punctuation mark.

Space types:

  • None — no space added at this location.
  • Normal space — a space that can be split at the end of a line.
  • Non-breaking space — keeps the punctuation mark with the preceding or following word.
  • Thin space / Narrow non-breaking space — narrower spaces (for typographic purposes).
  • Digit-width space — the width of a digit.

The Preview updates before you click Submit. An empty name, a missing language, a duplicate name, or incomplete level-1 quotation marks are rejected. There is no reference profile field on this screen.
